Jake Winkler

PhD Student

Prof. Jonathan Little

Current Program

Jake completed his Honours B.Sc. in Applied Bio-Molecular Science from Lakehead University in 2016 and his M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UBC Okanagan in 2019. Before starting his Ph.D. in Kinesiology with Dr. Jonathan Little, Jake worked in industry, started a company, and coordinated research for the Airborne Disease Transmission Research Cluster.

Outside of academia, Jake enjoys staying active through competitive triathlon and being outdoors (camping, canoeing, hiking, skiing, etc.)

Current Research

Jake is currently investigating the impact of nutritional interventions on Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) remission and immune cell function. In particular, he is looking at the preference for either a low-calorie or low-carbohydrate diet for T2D remission in a year long patient-centred, community-led implementation trial in BC’s Interior region. He will look at immune cell function before and after the intervention to understand how the immune system responds to real-world dietary changes and medication deprescription.
