The effect of intermittent hypoxia exposure on neurovascular transduction

Troy Stuckless, M.Sc. Student; Courtney Brown, M.Sc. Student; Paulo Dominelli, Ph.D; Najib Ayas, M.D., Associate Professor; Glen E. Foster, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

We are looking for adults free from disease and not taking any medications to participate in a study examining the effects of 40 minutes of intermittently breathing low oxygen on the function of your blood vessels.

Inclusion Criteria:
•                You are a male between the age of 18-45
•                You are currently not taking any medications, prescribed or over-the-counter

Exclusion Criteria:
•                Previous clinical history of liver disease, heart failure, heart attack, coronary artery disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, impaired kidney function, or smoked within the past year
•                Taking any medications
•                High blood pressure (greater than 140/90 mmHg)
•                Obesity (body mass index greater than 30)

This investigation is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the UBCO Faculty of Health and Social Development.

This study will involve measuring responses to moderate lower body suction, blood vessel function, and nervous system control. We will use a technique called microneurography, which involves inserting a microelectrode about the size and thickness of an acupuncture needle into the leg to measure your nerve activity directly. You will be expected to visit the laboratory for assessments on 2 occasions, and your total time commitment would be 5 hours.

The results of this research will provide new information about how intermittently breathing low oxygen changes the way our blood vessels function.
